Amazon.com Review

In the past, I would roll my rapidly glazing eyes whenever I heard some formerly sensible person carrying the cudgels of conspiracy theories: you know the rants: the Trilateral Commission, CIA, FBI, Masons, and Secret Societies are all out to run the world and silence truth seekers with intimidation, death--or plankton up the nostrils--and it seems the body formerly inhabited by a friend is ready to board a ship to the moon. But then I came across this book, and I was stunned at the volume of detail and even facts that have been amassed by the obsessive believers in these seemingly wacko conspiracy theories. The most disturbing fact is that people investigating conspiracy theories seem to have the highest death rate of any profession -- other than shark dentists. The editors adopt a sensible attitude: they do not claim that any interpretations in the book are necessarily true, but rather that these are truly things that conspiracy theorists have proposed. Note that this is a comic book of 39 tellings of almost as many conspiracy theories, but the comic-book medium in fact works very well. Recommended, unless some gruff voice calls me late at night and tells me to change my mind.... (Pssst: from the same people who brought you another Amazon.com Books favorite, The Big Book of Weirdos). --Jonathan Kochmer

One of the best books in the Factoid Press series of Big Books. All are good and surprisingly educational. Covers major conspiracies that are the most widely believed and explains them without advocating whether they are real or not. Don't let the comic book style turn you away. This is a serious survey with an excellent bibliography and some of the best illustrators and comic book artists in the English speaking world.

Awesome. You'd be surprised at how effective presenting the conspiracies in comic book form makes it a quick and fascinating read.Oh, and did I say "horrifying"! Some of the best explanations of the RFK, JFK and King assassinations I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot. I definitely had a chill after reading some of them because they make a lot of sense. This could be the companion book to Mel Gibson's character in "Conspiracy Theory." Or the X-Files.Great stuff and an occasional comic tone that hits at just the right time.Highest recommendation. More serious than you think. You will definitely start re-thinking a bunch of things. I'm getting the other books in the series.

If you don't believe, buy it and read it. If you DO believe, buy it and read it anyway. There's stuff you didn't know. Brilliant from concept to execution and one of the best and most important books I've ever read. Check out its companion piece, which may be even better: The Big Book of the Unexplained.

There are a few books on my required reading list and this one is right near the top. You cannot find a better more informative book on this subject. Mr. Moench has spent a lifetime gathering together these fine stories and I heartily urge everyone to check them out. I have bought more than a few copies of this book just to give away as gifts. Precious.

Love, Love, Love these books! Collect them all, full of all sorts of usful and interesting information!

Unsettling, & not to be read while alone at night. If you want to become a raving paranoid, start here.Good cartooning, though. Sharp art.

This book is entertaining as it is creepy. When reading I suggest keeping a open mind and DO NOT read it at night. Unless you like loosing sleep.

Started my Big Books love with Urban Legends, which is fantastic both as a record of twice told tales and a great gallery of comic book artists, then bought Unexplained, which I like even more. I bought Conspiracies hoping to hit the trifecta...and was actually really disappointed.I'm not sure exactly what goes so wrong, but for starters, the book fails to cover the basics. It immediately jumps past the obvious stories of, say, the JFK and MLK assassinations to get into the minutiae, whereas a nice primer would help get why the post-death mysterious killings and events are so mysterious. Each chapter, if it can be called that, tends to run on way too long, and rambles a lot. And though it feels like there should be no shortage of material, you almost start >yawn< getting tired of the same conspiracies examined at a different angle.

Amazon.com Review

From the 1920s to the 1950s, the race was on in Europe to score first ascents of the most formidable routes in the Alps and Dolomites. Buoyed by the advent of artificial climbing techniques (primarily the use of pitons), teams from France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Poland scaled the north faces of the Eiger, the Drus, the Matterhorn, the Grandes Jorasses, and other hallowed peaks, often pooling resources to obtain previously unimaginable success (and often tragedy), while the world below was ravaged by two brutal world wars. Noted French climbing guide Gaston Rébuffat lived at the center of this crucial era in mountaineering history. Starlight and Storm, first published in French in 1954 as Étoiles et Tempêtes, is his personal account of a rugged and glorious time before Gore-Tex, when men, soaked and chilled to the bone, sang to keep each other from falling asleep (forever) during exposed bivouacs in sub-zero degree snowstorms. Rébuffat's love of the climber's life is evident with each turn of the page. Where contemporary authors like Jon Krakauer, who provides this reissue's foreword, describe climbing in terms of nightmares and inner struggles, Rébuffat moves from one harrowing ascent to the next with uncommon gaiety and charm. "We have the instinct for it, the love of rocks and the necessary skill," he writes of time spent on the Drus, "so that we can climb without being worried by technical problems. Thus the whole climb was pure joy, for, while superficially watching over the actual ascent, the spirit had leisure to wander happily." The mysterious joy and lure of traversing earth's high places are expressed with a boyish innocence lost on much of today's climbing culture, making Starlight and Storm an enjoyable read, probably unlike any mountaineering journal you have ever encountered. --Kristopher Kaiyala

The Modern Library is going straight to the top to launch its new "Exploration" series with this volume by R?buffat, a legendary mountaineering guide. Published in the 1950s, this recounts his numerous adventures scaling nature's greatest heights of ice and rock. Lyrically written, the author, Gaston Rebuffat, one of the world's climbing greats, expresses such joy for mountaineering that it is infectious. No climbing enthusiast's library should be without this book. The photograph of Rebuffat which graces the cover of this book is alone worth the price of the book.Rebuffat is positively poetic in his description of various climbs. The reader almost feels as if one were as one with the mountain. A purist, the author climbed not for the glory of it, but for the sheer joy of the brotherhood of the rope. In these days, where climbing is often just a reason for a media event, the author's approach is refreshing, indeed.

item as described

Awesome mountaineering history.

Was a little water stained, but the vendor had already identified that, so I knew this before I ordered it.This book is worth the read.

Gaston tells a great mountain tale in an inspirational and poetic way! I found this book to be very inspirational!

"Starlight and Storm" is one of these rare examples of an outstanding climber who can also write engagingly and with poetic verve!Rebuffat is unquestionably one of the outstanding climbers of the early post WW II mountaineering in Europe and perhaps the most outstanding French climber of the period. His achievements (first French climb of the Walker Spur of the Grand Jorasses; first French Climb of the north face of Eiger, member of the Anapurna expedition) speak for themselves. What also sets apart Rebuffat from many others (many climbers write books to underwrite financially their future expeditions or to underscore their achievements) is his joyful, honest and inspired writing. Rebuffat has a real talent to convey beautifully his emotions and leads us masterfully along his fascinating climbs. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in mountaineering, and I commend John Krakauer for including it in the new "Exploration" series!

This edition has David Roberts' insightful introduction, which explains Rebuffat's gifts to mountaineering almost as well as the text itself.

Gaston was one of the worlds best Alpine climber. One of the few to climb all 8 major North Faces in the Alps. He doesn't dwell on the technical aspects of climbing. His other book, ON SNOW AND ROCK deals with climbing techniques, but this book focuses on the story of the climb. One can sense his resolve and melding of his self with the mountain. It was an inspiring book for me. Unlike some reviewers I never fully mastered my fear of heights, and quit after a number of years. But those climbs I did do were in part inspired by wanting to emulate this great climber.Highly recommended for "arm chair mountaineers."

"An old-time straight-shooting coach who has won everywhere, Boudreau is one of sport's most honest, blunt, and entertaining coaches. Yet, despite his accomplishments, never too big for his britches. Except for the night you'll read about in Bridgeport." --Mike "Doc" Emrick, NHL play-by-play commentator, NBC, New Jersey Devils TV, and Versus"When Bruce Boudreau was a scoring star for the junior Toronto Marlboros, I was in the stands at Maple Leaf Gardens cheering him on and now that he's an NHL coach he's still one of my favorite hockey people. Gabby is one of the great people in the game and his story is one of a love affair with the game of hockey; all levels of hockey, not just the NHL. Gabby's story is a must-read, because it's every bit as funny and quirky and nice as the man himself." --Bob McKenzie, TSN Hockey Insider "Bruce Boudreau is hockey's Everyman, a droll and loquacious fellow who has been everywhere there is ice and who knows everyone who ever has strapped on a pair of skates. Now the Washington Capitals coach takes you on the rollicking, inspiring ride with him. Make sure you demand frequent Greyhound points." --Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated "As Don Cherry, who wrote a foreword for this book, said: `I know you'll enjoy it.'" --www.hockeyjournal.com, December 5, 2009"A great tale of perseverance and positive thinking. After reading it, you can't help but root for the `Columbo' of the NHL." --www.faceoff.com, December 10, 2009

As a long suffering Washington Capitals fan, I have seen a series of managers ranging from the mediocre (Glen Hanlon, "Butch" Cassidy, etc.) to the good (Brian and Terry Murray). But none are what noted business author, Jim Collins, would refer to as a "Level 5" manager -- the one who generates extraordinary results by winning both with this team ("the workplace") and the fans ("the marketplace").Until now.Gabby is a light, pleasant read -- no heavy hockey philosophy here. But it reveals genius through simplicity and passion. Bruce Boudreau's success is spelled out beautifully in this book through a series of stories about his less-than-stellar playing career, lessons learned from minor league coaching, and becoming one of the NHL's most successful coaches. This book is an idea read for the following: A rabid Washington Capitals fan; a youth hockey coach; high school and up hockey players; and young business professionals looking to glean secrets and tips for being a successful leader. I see a lot of my own company's president (highly successful and a joy to work for) in Bruce Boudreau.Gabby talks about his experiences, both on and off the ice, in an entertaining way, but if you're not careful, you'll miss the many life-lessons he's trying to convey, such as the one trait, evident on almost every page, that underlies his strength and success -- genuine humility. There's a few things I thought he glossed over a bit much, such as his divorce from his first wife (but it took some courage to even talk about it), a bit more about some of the players he's coached for, especially some of today's stars on his and other NHL teams, and perhaps a bit more about his own personal background and how he developed his passion for hockey. Then again, I'm not quite done with the book yet.I suggest this book as a Christmas or birthday present, or a gift, for the young hockey player or coach in your life. But don't forget a copy for yourself, too.

Living near Buffalo, I'm a lifelong Sabres fan, but there is something about Bruce Boudreau that appeals to me, so I bought the book. Maybe I just like an honest coach who doesn't give cliche answers and one who wears his heart on his sleeve, or one who paid his dues more than most to make it to the NHL Whatever it is, it's not hard to root for him.The book is a lot lower-key than I thought it might be - not that much humor or controversy - but I still had no trouble reading it. It's an easy read, which is a compliment. I wish it had more on last season and a detailed report on the exciting playoff series against the Penguins. Instead, it's kind of an afterthought at the end of the book. I assume most of this was written before the 2008-2009 season. The book, however, gives you a good feel of what it's like to coach in the minors. You just have to be a fan of hockey and you'll enjoy reading this autobiography about an underdog who made good.

I started watching hockey when Bruce was the coach of the Mississippi SeaWolves and that is where I witnessed the greatest sporting event. They won the Kelly Cup and ever since I have been a fan of hockey. It's a great book about all the details of how much work it is to be successful in hockey. Bruce is a great coach and person.

Boudreau is the best, man.Great look inside the workings of an NHL locker room.Fun read. Great storytelling.

a good account of Bruce Boudreau's journey into coaching in the NHL. A bit boring at times, but it does give the reader a good snapshot of hockey life in the minor leagues.

If you like and enjoy hockey, you will appreciate Gabby's observations and experiences. I enjoyed the book, and think any hockey fan would as well.

In this account of the career of one of hockey's premier players and coaches (Now with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks) this is an accurate and humorus account of one of hockieys most colorful characters. Recommended for all hockey and sports enthusiasts. Bruce Budreau tells it like it was and like it is.

Great hockey story from one of the better coaches in the game today. Amazing story on how one day or one moment can change your life forever. This is a great read for anyone who is a fan of the game or a coach-to-be.

One of the best SF books I've read in a while and to think it's a debut novel. Loved it. The world building, based on India and the Hindu religion, was superb. I loved the main character, Hailimi Mercedes Jaya Bristol, is wonderful in her own right, but the cheesy blurb on the back that likened her to Star Wars characters almost put me off the book when I first picked it up. So happy I ignored that and took a chance on Behind the Throne. Her two body guards, Zin and Emmory were my kind of guys and, coming from an SF romance background, I keep hoping for a relationship to spark between Hail and Emmory, but given the culture, not likely. I've already pre-ordered the sequel and can't wait to get it.

I hate those reviews where someone spoils the plot of the book for you. I'm not going to do that. What I will do is say that every one of the stars I gave this book was earned.Likes:Strong female character - Hail is badass. Sure, she sometimes borders on too amazing and too good, but K.B. yanks her back from being a Mary Sue, with a hard dose of reality and vulnerability.Detailed (but not too detailed) world building. - Have you ever read one of those books where the author spends 2 pages describing the leaves on the tree? This is not that. It's fast paced, descriptive but not overly so. I felt like I was allowed to use my imagination.Diversity in characters. It's not all a lumped homogeneous mire. - Not just race but also sexuality. AwwwesomesauceFamiliar Science Fiction - Behind the Throne is set in the future on another planet, but things are familiar and if they are not, they're explained in Earth terms.Loved Hail and the rest of the crew and I can't wait to read the next installment.

The story is about a member of a royal family who, after having spent several years traveling incognito and working as a gunrunner, is dragged back home.In the first third of the book, we learn that she doesn't want to be a princess, but does want to find out who is responsible for hurting members of her family. And... that's about it. Over and over. Gets really tedious. I almost stopped reading. In the middle third of the book, she mostly sits in her suite of rooms, trading Meaningful Glances with her staff. Occasionally she leaves so somebody can make a clumsy assassination attempt. In the final third of the book, things pick up a bit. Things get blown up and shot at. Destiny accepted.I rated this about 2.5 stars, but rounded up because it got better toward the end.

We start in-media-res as gunrunner Hail Bristol wakes fromunconsciousness in the wreckage of her ship convinced that her crewis in mutiny and her lover is dead (possibly while trying to killher). Then the ship is boarded by Imperial hunters who have cometo..Take Hail back to her mother, the Empress. It seems that while Hail was out pursuing her father's killer and graduallycutting all ties with home, her sisters and niece have been murdered, hermother is dying and she is *it*, the heir apparent. The Indranan Empire, although now multi-ethnic is a matriarchy based onon Indian culture. Having broken away from Terra centuries ago (althoughnow enjoying fairly good relations again) it is a medium sized powerand very much a monarchy. Although there are laws and procedures thatare normally followed, apparently the Empress can make her will feltat any level of society subject only to not losing the support of theMatriarch's council (and frankly, she can defenestrate most of themif she feels like it). Arriving back home, Hail is immediately throwninto a welter of conspiracies and the realization that her mother isnot just dying -- she was poisoned. Along with all this, and probablynot coincidentally, the Saxon Alliance is pushing at the frontiersand may have actually invaded an Imperial world using Russian "littlegreen men" tactics. Hail must decide who, if anyone, she can trustan start to prune the rot at the heart of the Empire.Hail is an engaging character, though at times she comes across as abit callow (unless it's intended to be a cultural thing, she sticksher tongue out at people too often). It is, I think, meant to bea bit un-nerving that she is no democrat and believes unflinchinglyin the monarchy (despite having turned her back on it for years).

I loved the irreverent, smart and deadly Hailimi Bristol, who has quite the reputation in the galaxy as a gunrunner and all around bad ass. That is until two Trackers catch up with her right after an attempt on her life left her a bit more vulnerable than usual with all of her crew dead, including the man she loved. The Trackers return her home to take her place as Princess and heir to the Indranan Empire. Her sisters and niece have been killed and she is the only one left to take over once her mother, the ailing Empress, is gone. Of course there is plenty of action, with multiple attempts on her life, the threat of war with the Saxons and much intrigue at court. She has to figure out who is behind it all if she wants to survive to punish her family’s killers and save the Empire. I liked the matriarchal empire, with their society based on Hindu culture but with changes since it’s been thousands of years since their ancestors came from earth. The secondary characters were great - the Trackers who become her trusted Bodyguards, Emmory and Zin, and several retainers, who give her a base of trusted allies when it seems that everyone else is trying to kill her or at the least, discredit her. Hail is one tough woman, and it seems that her career as a gunrunner was just what she needed to prepare her to fight for her place on the throne. The second book in the series releases soon, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

The Rag Coat

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-- Minna, a young Appalachian girl, wants very badly to attend school, but she doesn't have a coat. Her father has just died and her family cannot afford one. When a group of mothers who gather at her house regularly to make quilts hear of her predicament, they decide to help her. Minna is thrilled, but when the new coat is finished and she wears it to the one-room schoolhouse, she is teased by her classmates for wearing rags. Minna is hurt, but she eventually gains their interest when she explains that her coat is full of stories--their stories--for each scrap has come from one of their homes. The children are enthralled and sorry for their taunts. Mills's care and attention to details make her book as charming as her narrative. The paper is a cream color, and the watercolor palette is warm but faded to give an antique cast to the illustrations. The large, lovely paintings that bring the characters and period to life are balanced by text on the bottom half of the left-hand pages; the generous blank space is filled with small scraps of colorful cloth. The writing is lyrical; its heartwarming message emphasizes the value of a community and sharing. It might even inspire a class quilting project--and a chance to share more stories. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public LibraryCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews

Minna's family can't afford a coat for her, but Papa keeps her warm in winter with a burlap sack and Mama's patchwork quilt; this happy family understands that ``People only need people, and nothing else.'' Soon, Minna loses one of those people: Papa, a coal miner, gets the lung sickness and dies, after urging eight- year-old Minna to start school. There's still the problem of the coat, solved by neighbors who contribute scraps and help to make one of patchwork lined with the old sack, ready almost as soon as cold weather begins. At first, the other children tease Minna about her outlandish garment; then, learning that the patchwork contains bits of their own histories, they begin to honor Minna and the stories she tells about the coat's many pieces. This sweet, sober tale about love and good will overcoming poverty is reminiscent of Marguerite de Angeli's thoughtful books--especially in the soft, delicately detailed illustrations with their subtly poignant charcterizations and lovingly evoked setting in time past. Unusually appealing. (Picture book. 5-10) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

I bought this for my now 6 year old about a year ago. We have read it probably 10-15 times and at some point each time, I start crying. The story is simple, honest and filled with real emotion and lessons about love, appreciation, generosity, being true to oneself and kindness. It models so many important lessons and behaviors for children these days. I think the paucity of these kinds of stories, that are so down home, is what strikes a chord in me each time. My daughter also likes the story and gets very serious when we read it. Can't recommend it enough.

I bought this based on the description. It's very difficult to find books that young kids (mine are 5 and under) can understand about death. This handles it beautifully and introduces them to a new part of the country that they did not know about before. What I love is how the community pulls together to help carry out the father's wish and how the young girl was able to stand up for herself and overcome her situation. There are a lot of themes and messages in this book and it is very well done. We've read this countless times since I bought it and it's one of our favorites.

This has become one of my favorite stories as an adult. As far as the kids, they love it as well but probably not for the same reasons. It can help them to understand to have compassion and about what really matters to people. Great book ❤️

The book was in excellent condition and I'm very pleased with the condition of the book

I must confess, I was not prepared to read my 5 year old a book on death...and I was a little shocked to find out during my first time reading it to her (I guess I should have pre-read it). Even so, I loved it, and so did she! This story deals with the sorrow of death and the humiliation of poverty in a real and positive way, without being sentimental. It is beautiful to see a child come up with a loving solution to her problems.

Loved this book for my granddaughter, age 8. A sweet story, great illustrations and a thought/discussion provoking story.

I just adore this story. It has so much heart. I like to read it and pair with the song "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton. We an compare and contrast the song and the story.

I read this to my children as part of the Five in a Row curriculum. It is such a sweet book. The first time I read it, I had to hold back the tears.
