I cannot recommend this book enough! We homeschool and I originally bought this to add to his first grade curriculum next year; however, once I started reading it, we jumped into the games immediately...too good (and too important) to wait until next year. The quote about how it's more important to prepare kids for disasters than it is to teach them how to tie their shoes sold me and I'm absolutely happy we bought this. Our four year old (almost five) is afraid of the dark. We started playing some of the games in this book and his confidence has grown already. We tested him on the community awareness game and were happy to see he could direct us to the nearest hospital and fire station - practicing really sharpened his "left right left" skills as well, and this gave us a peace of mind to know that he knew not only where to go, but how to get there, should he need to walk/run there for some reason. The book has lots of ideas like that, that I probably would not have thought of on my own. I read several sections out this book to my husband who is an Emergency Manager; he loves this book as well. (And he's hard to please with these types of books). With over 15 years of experience and a masters degree in this field, (so a lot of experience with disasters), he said, "There's nothing this guy, Young, has said that I disagree with so far." If my husband is impressed, that's saying a lot. Which I know, for strangers, means nothing, but check it out for yourself and prepare your kids for life, beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic!
Playful Preparedness is a collection of games to teach and practice situational awareness. I started the book thinking I wasn't going to find much of use to me, maybe a few hints here and there, but every "game" is something I can use. Some of the games require supplies gathering (all relevant, no toilet paper tubes) but most are simply activities to do in a fun manner, the same way hide and seek or tag are games. I have both a 19 yo and a 4 yo and many of the activities could be done with both. A few of them will be too "young" for my college-aged daughter, and a few we'll have to wait a few years for my 4 yo old, but for the most part they can be done at different levels by both. Also, by playing these games with my kids, it will increase my and my husband's situational awareness. The games are all practical and a have a specific purpose.Most games have suggestions for modifying them for both little kids and older ones, and also how to grow the activity as you and your child get better at each one.I highly recommend this book and will definitely be referring to it often in the years to come.
What a novel concept - interactive games with kids that have the byproduct of teaching the principals of preparedness. This book instructs the reader on a variety of games and explains which skills will be learned and why they are important. It is easy to get kids to learn when they're having fun. And when you're dealing with survival situations, is there any skill that is more important than to be prepared for whatever scenario confronts them?I have many preparedness books, but I haven't purchased one focused on kids until this one. This one is easy to flip through and well-organized. If you don't care for one of the game concepts, easily move on to the next one.I have five kids, from college down to second grade. I would say this book is focused on elementary and junior high level kids. Some of the games are things we already actually do, but with a twist toward preparedness. I look forward to trying them out!
Parents MUST read this book! I was trying to figure out a way to integrate life/survival skills and found this book. I'm SO glad I did. This is a step-by-step, broken down into each survival skill. Even if you think you or your child will never need them, knowledge doesn't take up space. Better safe than sorry!
Picked up this book to get some new ideas for learning with my son. I like the games suggested. It is always a good way to teach children thru games, they can learn things that could someday save their lives without scaring them. If I can make it fun, the learning will stick and he will have the skills he needs in an emergency.
