Once again Nora Ephron gives us the chance to pretend we are her best friend and that's a great thing. Nora Ephron is one of the great essayists around. This book, like I Feel Bad About My Neck, is full of pithy observations about life at age 60 something in New York City. Ephron's merciless observations on growing older in the 21st century can't help but delight. (The way that Google, for example, has become the savior of aging dinner companions who can't remember the movie titles.)There's an awful lot to laugh about in this book and as with her previous books, I loved every minute of it. But when it was done, I felt sad. Ephron has so much, but she seems depressed. She's wealthy and the excitment of living in NYC, while clearly dear to her, is not new. She's still on top of her game writing and directing movies, and yet there seems to be little that thrills her about that. (She barely mentions Julie & Julia.) Ephron badly misses her best friend Ruthie, who passed away and worries about her other friends. There is a strange essay about an annual Christmas dinner among friends where the hostess takes away Ephron's traditional assigned task of making dessert. The hostess's behavior is so odd that you can't help but wonder what else there is to the story--or what the hostess's reaction is going to be when she reads and extended chapter in a best selling book, about taking the job of pie maker away from Nora Ephron.I couldn't put this book down, but it is very, very short and I finished it in a day. "I wish it were longer," is generally a great thing to say about a book but this book really should have been longer, 100% longer, to justify the price. Had it been a reasonable length, I would have given it five stars. If you love Nora Ephron, and I really do, keep that in mind.
There are some biographical works you read, and you realize they are wonderful but only later. Some books grab you on that first page, and take you through a whirlwind tour through a life. You know immediately that there is an extraordinary intellect behind this work. Nora Ephron is that rare writer that intellectually towers above her fellow writers. She is what great writing is all about, the ability to startle you with observations and occurrences using language so elegantly that it can't be said any better than that.The LAUGHTER in this book is CONTAGIOUS. The stories are not to be believed except that you know they are true. Ryan O'Neal is at a funeral, and not realizing he is looking at his daughter Tatum O'Neal 30 feet away. He makes a pass at her. Nora is sympathetic; part of this book is dedicated to the concept that she can't remember anything from whole periods of her life, and major events that she has attended are now gone from memory.She tells us how Eleanor Roosevelt was the center of attention in her family household growing up. She had pictures of the first lady on her wall. In her 20's, she travels with a group to meet Mrs. Roosevelt, and now years later she remembers nothing of the journey or the meeting. You just can't stop laughing, nor should you.Thank God for Google, because the author believes that the senior moment is now what we should all be calling the Google moment. You stand in line with your friends at a movie house, and everybody is trying to recall, what was the name of that movie that Jack Nicholson starred in with Matt Damon? Now all you have to do is take out your Blackberry, and do a check. It used to take a major effort to find out what we now find out in seconds. In the end, you really never cared what the name of the movie was.I promise you if you read this book, you will not be disappointed. From the humor to the nature of the stories, to the originality that is displayed, it is unique. This is after all the person that brought us the movie Sleepless in Seattle and then went on to write When Harry Met Sally. If you have any interest in how the movie industry works, she has a chapter called FLOPS, which is the best short piece on the movie industry that I have read in years.By the way, make sure you read the chapter entitled the Six Stages of E-Mail. I never understood why the computer age promised to set us free, and I like others feel imprisoned by the machine more than ever. Ephron offers a completely plausible explanation for this phenomenon. If you are a Nora Ephron fan, this is the best writing she has done in years. Race to get it, and thank you for reading this review.Richard C. Stoyeck
If Nora Ephron's new book, I REMEMBER NOTHING, is a best seller, one would hope that the comedian Jerry Seinfeld is getting a cut of the royalties -- because one of the classic episodes in his TV series must have provided Ephron with the inspiration to write this book.The Seinfeld episode involved a scheme by Seinfeld and his pal, George Constanza, to develop for NBC a TV sitcom based on "nothing." The theory is that American TV audience is so stupid that it would be fascinated by a television program about how regular workers got up and commute to work.In her book, Ephron describes her life in such detail. She talks about her family, her tastes, her marriages, her divorces, and her life in very pedestrian terms. And while, occasionally, there are some amusing and even seemingly serious moments, for the most part Ephron's book is hugely boring.Ephron is a card-carrying member of the eastern establishment - the glitterati of New York and Washington - and she seems to think that her life is fascinating. It isn't. Indeed, if a social scientist were to study the likes of Ephron and her friends, they would probably find a pretty good explanation for why American appears to be in decline.Self-absorption seems to be the order of the day in Ephron's world. Her previous book talked about her distress about he wrinkles in her neck. Good Lord. Social commentary has got to be better than this. Can you imagine trying to make a movie out Ephron's book? It would never make it off the cutting room floor. And, frankly, this book should have never been published.
I was looking forward to a witty, fun read. What I got was the feeling that she had to write a book to get done with a contract. I sensed bitterness and absolutely no cohesiveness in the essays. I felt it a complete waist of my time and money.
Oh my goodness. I love Nora Ephron. It was her mother who said, "Everything is copy," and it was Nora who proved it. She makes writing look easy and anyone who has ever attempted it knows it's not. Then, like adding spices to one of her gourmet meals, she sprinkles in humor here and there, effortlessly, and the story is incredible. She makes you want to come back for more.
