I have read many many books about Walt Disney. This book gave a different viewpoint. It was a fast read. 1928-2016-discussed movies, parks and personalities. I love Walt and what he accomplished and that his legacy carries on today.

The book was informative, but I found the timeline format to be distracting. In that regard, the title is very misleading as it’s more timeline format than actual story.

Great read makes you want to know more. I had a lot of those "oh really moments"

Got this for my brother for Christmas and he loves it. Safe to say I succeeded with the gift giving

Very much enjoyed the info in this book while vacationing in Orlando.

More a scattershot of factoids than a coherent narrative, you’d be better off reading the various Wikipedia pages about Walt, the company, and the parks. The formatting is particularly bad on kindle. Skip this one.

I was looking for something to read so I combined my love of Disney with books and this presented itself. This has some very little known facts that I was surprised by. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fantastic read that is passionate about Disney. The book is updated all the way through the opening of Shanghai Disney.

This is the second book I’ve read by Aaron Goldberg! I’ve enjoyed both of them and would recommend to anyone. Disney enthusiast or not!

Extras is the unexpected final book in the Uglies series, following what was originally touted as a trilogy. The series is set in a dystopian future in which the ideas of beauty and conformity are the central ideals of the society. This book takes place a few years after Tally's story ended and centers on Aya Fuse. While conformity is less of a "thing" than it once was, beauty still remains as a measure of worth. But is apparently no longer enough to be beautiful OR to be unique. In Aya's city, being famous was the primary goal. The more famous you are, the higher your "face rank" is and that rank is the currency upon which her society is based. There are pretty specific cliques within her fame-obsessed world. There are the tech heads, those that are obsessed with the newest technology. There are also the surge monkeys, those who are obsessed with the newest and weirdest plastic surgery trends in their quest for physical attractiveness. And then there are the kickers, those obsessed with tracking down the latest story, the latest gossip, the latest bit of news. These are posted on feeds, techy versions of our blogs. Those whose face ranks are at the low end are the extras, the climbers who are obsessed with raising their ranks. Aya is an extra with a face rank so low that no one knows who she is. And she is obsessed with changing that. When she stumbles upon a mysterious group of girls, it changes everything for her. Most of the book focuses on Aya and her friends and they are all important to the story. But we also see Tally and her crew again, brought into the story at important moments. There are a ton of twists and turns in the plot, and quite a few surprises. In many ways, this is a timely book for this day and age. It confronts the ideas of beauty and fame both, and turns it on edge in an extreme way that makes you think. There are also themes of ethics and morality that present themselves in interesting, even if subtle, ways. There is no question that I loved this series and the thoughts it provoked. But I can't help but wish that perhaps it took all of these themes just a bit further. Like any good dystopian story, the author criticizes current society and focuses on aspects of it that are disturbing in their potential for disaster. He took those things to extreme levels and based the world of his books on those aspects. Beauty, conformity, fame... all of these things have the potential for disaster. And all of these things are questioned. But in the end, Tally still becomes Pretty and Aya still becomes famous. True, as characters they have questioned those things and they are aware of the darker side, but they still became the very things that are at the center of controversy. While both of these girls rebelled against the system, they both benefitted from it and I am not sure that was the intended message. Of course, I do tend to over think things! My Recommendation: This is an well-written series with some important issues as the focus. It is engaging and thought-provoking and a fantastic reading experience.

My favorite thing about dystopian fiction is their ability to give me a different perspective on our world, culture, and society. Dystopian novels push me to really consider the world that we live in and see a little bit of our reality in the dystopian world, to see the potential for what our world could become. Uglies is one of those novels... one that made me really think about some fundamental issues that are present in our own culture.Every dystopian world is a the result of a utopian effort to eliminate those things considered to be detrimental to society. For the world of Uglies, that is nonconformity and extremes. Set about three hundered years in the future, the world is otherworldly high-tech and the government provides everything to its people, even the extreme cosmetic surgery that is a major part of it's culture. At 16, each person receives cosmetic surgery that transforms them from an "ugly" to a "pretty." Prior to surgery, each person can choose what their future self will look like within the governmentally mandated standards of beauty. The lines between ugly and pretty are not just visual, but physical as well. Once transformed, new pretties cross the river to live in beautiful condominiums where, for the time being, their only job is to be beautiful and to have fun. Later, they will have other operations in conjunctiuon with the passage of time. Eventually they will have surgery to turn them into "Middle Pretties," those who are adults with jobs. And later they move on to become "Crumblies," our senior citizens.Tally Youngblood is the protagonist, about to turn 16 and looking forward toi her operation. Her best friend Peris has already had his operation and she is feeling the strain that comes between Pretties and Uglies. Shortly before she has her operation, she meets Shay, another Ugly. They become fast friends, hoverboarding and pulling the pranks that are a part of Ugly tradition. Shay is different from anyone she has ever known, balking against the surgery. Tally ignores that, but is forced to deal with it when Shay runs away just before their shared birthday. When she goes, she leaves Tally a note with cryptic directions that she doesn't initially understand. On the morning of her surgery, Tally is taken instead to Special Circumstances... a paramilitary division of the government that enforces the rules. There she is given an ulitmatum to give up Shay or never get her surgery to become a Pretty. This is the motivation behind the plot of the novel as Tally discovers things about herself, about her friends, about the world, and about her own feelings. This is a character-driven novel with important themes to consider. The concept of identity is a big part of the storyline. The government has created and mandated these surgeries in order to create conformity. Extreme individuality is considered to be a disruptive aspect of past societies, creating a standard of appearance that even removes racial markers. Beauty is dictated by those standards, a nod to the image-obsessed society that we now live in. But beauty almost loses its meaning among the Pretties, when everyone is beautiful. Uglies think of themselves as almost temporary, fUlawed. After all, they will be "fixed" when they turn 16. Even the personalities and personal dynamics change when they move from Ugly to Pretty, underlying the idea that we are defined by our appearance. The characters are well-developed and easily relatable in different ways. Because of the wide range of characters along the Ugly-Pretty spectrum, there were lots of perspectives and thoughts about the world. Some of the characters made you really think about the choices you might make for yiourself if in their position. There are undoubtedly things that are tempting about the Pretty part of society, but at the same time, the implications are frightening. And there are just as many things that are tempting about remaining Ugly (our own reality), as well as the sacrificesMy Recommendation: This is a fantastic example of dystopian literature, a world with both utopian and dystopian elements. The implications of a world like the one in this book are a little scary, particularly when compared to the world and culture we live in today. Fantastic read that will make you think!

This book was another hit with my princess-obsessed twins (aged 3). We picked up another book in this series, Goodnight Pirate but one sharp-eyed girl spotted Goodnight Princess on the back cover and demanded we order it.Like Goodnight Pirate this is a riff on Goodnight Moon, a young girl gradually says goodnight to her toys, dresses and princess fantasies and finally goes to bed. It's a quick and fun read, not much there for parents, but girls who are of the 'princess' age will like it.

So simple and so sweet for bedtime. My nearly 2 year old cant get enough. It’s got a great rhyme, and the illustrations are nice and dreamy. It’s almost like I can tell he’s imagining with the story teller. Great for your bedtime story collection!

Our grand daughter loves visiting us on our farm. She is obsessed with riding with her grandpa on the extra seat in our tractors. The kids have a hard time getting her to go to bed, she’s 2 1/2. Grandpa read this to her before bed while she stayed with us and each night, we had no problems at all getting her to go to sleep.

Fabulous bedtime story for farm children or those who love the farm. I bought two of these! Gave one to grandson this last Christmas for his house and then purchased another for my house! Great story to wind down to at the end of a busy day! I was told it was similar to the Good Night Moon story. Either way it fits the interest for those tractor kids! The book is well presented by its story and illustrations!

My toddler son is tractor crazy, so when I saw this book I knew I had to buy it. The text is sparse, simple and well written. It is written in British english, so some spellings and rhymes might seem a little odd to an American audience. The illustrations are very nice, showing the little protagonist playing with farm toys in his suburban room and drifting of to sleep with dreams of saying good night to all the equipment and animals on his farm. It has become a nightly staple at bedtime. Highly recommended.

Super cute bed time story. Bought it for my 4 year old daughter. She loves it! Great illustrations and I like the size of the book. A lot of books I find on here are cheaper in price but the size is always much smaller than what you would find like at the book fair. We also purchased the Goodnight Digger book for my 3 year old son.

Purchased this book as well as Good Night Digger for our 1 1/2 year old grandson. He loves them and so do I. Beautiful, clear illustrations. Easy for a child to pick out the equipment as well as the animals. Sweet , soothing, story. I have purchased 60 plus books over the past year and have kept all of our kids books from childhood. Top picks. Five plus stars for illustrator and writer.

Good book since he loves the goodnight tractor book we thought to add more. Even though the rhymes are not that good in this book, he still likes it. I mean not that many words rhyme with digger... well maybe kid friendly ones.

I got this book for my son because we love Goodnight Tractor. This one is not as good in my opinion. It’s written a little strange and doesn’t flow as well. The pictures are nice though.

About the Author

Lew Welch was born August 16, 1926 in Phoenix, Arizona. He entered Reed College in 1948, and the following year moved into a house with Gary Snyder; the following year they were joined by Philip Whalen. By the fall of 1949 Welch was co-editor of the school's literary magazine and was writing constantly. He wrote his senior thesis on Gertrude Stein and graduated in 1950.For a number of years Welch showed his poetry only to close friends. With the emergence of the Beat movement, however, Welch's friends Philip Whalen and Gary Snyder began receiving national attention. Welch's desire to devote himself completely to his poetry was revived, and he soon became a part of the San Francisco poetry scene. Donald Allen included one of Welch's poems in The New American Poetry - the important anthology published in 1960. That same year Welch's first book, Wobbly Rock, was published. He was drinking heavily during this time, but he continued to write extensively, and in 1965 published three books.Despite his burgeoning success, Welch's bouts with depression and heavy drinking continued. On May 23, 1971, Gary Snyder went up to Welch's campsite in the Sierra Nevada mountains and found a suicide note in Welch's truck. Despite an extensive search, Welch's body was never recovered.Donald Allen published much of Welch's work posthumously via Grey Fox Press, now an imprint of City Lights Books.Gary Snyder is an American poet (often associated with the Beat Generation and the San Francisco Renaissance), as well as an essayist, lecturer, and environmental activist (frequently described as the "poet laureate of Deep Ecology". Snyder is a winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. His work, in his various roles, reflects an immersion in both Buddhist spirituality and nature. Snyder has translated literature into English from ancient Chinese and modern Japanese. For many years, Snyder served as a faculty member at the University of California, Davis, and he also served for a time on the California Arts Council.

I honestly had no idea what to expect since I only knew of Lew Welch through Jack Kerouac's novels but wanting to explore the Beat poets fully, I bought this. I was really blown away by Welch's masterful writing. His writing is concise, mysterious, entertaining, and brilliant. His grasp on the english language is exquisite. I highly recommend buying this.

ended up with this. apparently Mr. Welch was a moving inspiration for Robert Hunter, lyricist for the Grateful Dear. Hunter is pretty inspiring himself.

Beautiful! Also brings back the beatnik years for those of us old enough to remember.

Noticed this book on the "New Release" shelf at my local library and read it due to being intrigued with the odd cover plus a poet I had been heretofore unaware of. (Bad girl). Anyway, this Lew Welch was odd and powerful and angry and a bunch of other things too. Perfect. Plus, he (Welch), toys with a lot of words or concepts and language in an (again), intriguing way. So, my brother's birthday was coming up. (He's fond of The Beats), and yet, I was unclear if he had been familiar with Welch. Purchased his gift thus, from Amazon, along with another little book of Kerouac's haikus. All arrived clean, timely, etc. Good work! Thank you Amazon!

A handsome book, "Ring of Bone" assures Lew Welch a firm place in the galaxy of Beat poets. Welch was comrades with Gregory Corso, Jack Kerouac and especially Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen. Reading his poetry I see him moving toward what Jonathan Stalling calls the "Poetics of Emptiness," the Zen influence prevalent in Beat poetry, especially West Cost Beat poetry. While I enjoy his poetry, the detailed observation of nature, the self-enforced solitudes and his appreciation for language, I wish he had seen his mundane life as legitimate material for his poetry. He worked as a cab driver (and does have a series of "rider" poems that I particularly like), on the docks, as copy editor for Ward's catalogue, and even acted in a Hollywood movie, but all of this experience seems purposely excluded from his poetry. Obviously, from his statement about poetics, he understood where Words come from, but he did not privilege his blue-collar reality. Surely rust on iron drums abandoned along the docks is as mystical as lichen. An important poet, if he had not tragically deleted so much of his life (both aesthetically/editorially and by his suicide at 45) he might even have been a great poet.

Book arrived in top shape,

Lew Welch was a great lyric poet, with a gift for the music of words that equalled Keats and T.S. Eliot. It's a hard gift to handle, as evidenced by the limited and sporadic production of lyric poets generally, and by Welch's own short and stormy life. Comparing artists is unfair, but since Welch has been neglected, it should be said that the best poems in Ring of Bone are better as lyrics than those of Robert Duncan, William Carlos Williams, Charles Olson, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, or any of the other mid-to-late 20th century establishment "greats." They are also better as lyrics than those of other beat poets. Philip Whalen acknowledged this in a letter to Welch after Welch had enthusiastically reviewed his collection, On Bear's Head, in the San Francisco newspaper in 1969: "D.R. Carpenter mailed me a copy of your Chronicle review. I feel enormously flattered & pleased & delighted & at the same time wish that the book amounted to something-- & after all it just DON'T, not really. Any one of your poems is more authentic & solid than this whole wretched book"
