#107,898 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

My son is almost 2 and loves this book. He overall loves the National Geographic Look and Learn series but this one is one of his favorites. The book is not about different dog breeds but rather about dogs in general, so if you are looking for a book that has a bunch of breeds in it this is not it. The book rather teaches children about dogs in general and how some dogs have long hair and some dogs have short hair and some have floppy ears and some have ears that stand up. They also give little facts about dogs and their sense of smell and hearing. The books are interactive in that they will ask the child to point out the dog with the floppy ears etc. The book not only teaches about dogs but gets the child involved by posing questions. Overall this is a great book in the series and i would recommend it to any parent that has a child who loves dogs.

My 15 month old is obsessed with dogs and this book is just perfect! I love that it is a board book so that it is sturdy and can't be ripped. There are lots of different dogs in this book. All different sizes, breads, mixes. I like how in addition to her looking at the dogs which she loves, it also has some learning elements with the different sizes of dogs. There are also facts about dogs for little ones. The pictures alone are worth it if your child is interested in dogs/animals but the facts make it even better. Would definetely recommend. Great buy! I plan on getting other books in the series.

We love the children books and magazines published by National Geographic and we have a growing inventory of these publications. My kids love them so much that we ordered this book even before it was published. Today, it arrived and both my kids have already gone through it a couple of times. This book is the newest addition to the National Geographic Look and Learn series. According to the publisher, the books in this series are prepared for children between 1 to 4 years of age. If you have other more famous books of these series like 'Count', 'Match', 'Opposites' and 'Different', you will find this one pretty similar to those in terms of the physical appearance and the organization. It is a 4.5 X 4.5 inches square with 22 pages. It is a classical board book design so that younger children can enjoy it without tearing the pages. The binding is of good quality (our experience from other books of these series) and the colors are vibrant. It is organized in a way that two adjacent pages have a picture of a single vehicle against monochrome background and the next pair of pages has the actual image taken at its original location (a boat in the sea or a plane in the sky etc.) In the first pair, some parts of the vehicle like windshield, tire , lights etc are marked and the next pair of pages either give a handy information or ask a simple question.Although I like this general design from the other books I have, there is something not that appealing about this book. May be, it is because of that this book is a little bit out of the scope of National Geographic (no wild animals or nature photos) or that the information given or the questions asked are too basic for someone over 2 years old to pay attention. The other books like 'Match'National Geographic Little Kids Look and Learn: Match and 'Same and Different'National Geographic Little Kids Look and Learn: Same and Different offer a lot more educational value and really challenging questions that would make a toddler think and pay attention. In these aspects, it seems that National Geographic want to take a slice from the high popularity of the 'things that go' among young children. My feeling is that this book can be beneficial for around one years of age while older children may find it a bit basic (they still enjoy the great photos though)My other criticism about the book is that it depicts a navy war ship (probably a plane carrier) in the section of boats. That is not a war vessel loaded with guns but still we try to avoid everything that even slightly refers to weapons, violence or war and in that aspect that selection is a real poor one for a book that is written for a toddler. In conclusion, both price wise and the quality wise it is a good addition to the series, however the contents do not match the taste of the other books we own from this series. So 4 stars out of 5...

This is a perfect book for any baby that loves dogs. Our daughter cannot get enough of dogs and she squeals with glee at this book. She is now 11 months old and she loves to turn the pages and point at the dogs. I'm sure she'll be enjoying this book for years. In terms of content, it has high quality photographs and a few basic informational tidbits for young kids. It is a very sturdy little book.

If you asked my 18 month old, this is the greatest book ever written. She even sleeps with it. Good quality, lots of pictures, and enough variation to be able to talk about the different types of dogs (good for kids who are learning to talk).

I bought a few of these books for my friends 2yr olds birthday. Shes a more intelligent toddler so I looked for books that would match that. The pictures are bright, the information is good for a small child, short sentences with little informational tidbits. I think these will be excellent.

Great little book for young children or beginning readers. Has great pictures of dogs and helpful tips for identification characteristics and basic care.

My 3 yr old grandson LOVES this book. His mom says he carries it everywhere. I like it because it has the thick pages so I don't have to worry about him getting rough with it. National Geographic Little Kids Look and Learn: Things That Go (Look & Learn)

I love this book! It really works for all of my family. The meals taste great. All nutritional info is printed. There are numerous pictures. All of the recipes I've tried have sodium content that meet my low sodium diet restrictions and still taste good to my kids and husband. The shrimp tacos on the front cover were a big hit with my husband.(I did use Mexican creama instead of sour cream). I made the Ginger Beef Stir Fry and the whole family liked it except one child picked out the red bell pepper and another one would not eat the water chest nuts but overall it was a really good meal. I like that the book has a variety of foods and uses common ingredients. Another nice feature is the "make it a meal" box on the page with an entree that gives suggested sides and desert to go with the entree. This book was just what I wanted.

purchased a used copy. the previous owner dog eared pages. But I loved the ones so it was all good. Just my type of recipes. clean food using fresh stuff. easy to used with pictures to help. love it. After my husbands heart attack I need help coming up with new recipes for our family that we would all like. this is a good place to start. He love everything I have fixed. I work so wanted something easy and fast with real food not gourmet stuff that would take too long to do. perfect.

My husband and I have loved cooking out of this cookbook so far. The things we like about them are:* The recipes are relatively healthy.* Most ingredients are easy to find or things we already have around the house.* The recipes appeal to a mainstream American audience. Healthy versions of chilis, pasta dishes, casseroles, etc.* Many of the recipes are quick so we can make them during the week.As someone who works full-time and is pregnant, relatively healthy, easy, and mainstream are what I need right now. I feel this cookbook delivers!

I purchased this in addition to other AHA cookbooks so that I could expand my selection of healthy meals with less forethought. This is a great book for family cooking. It is divided into sections for quick meals, longer prep meals, cooking once for two meals, cooking with kids, etc. Then most sections are divided by fish/poultry/beef/vegetables. My kids have loved most of the meals I have selected so far. It is also fairly simple to expand the recipes for larger families (we have 6).I have always been pleased with AHA cookbooks and this is no exception

I had this book out from the library for a month, trying it out before buying it. It is full of delicious, nutritious, and easy recipes. I love that it uses fresh ingredients, nothing worse than a cookbook that calls for pre-packaged ingredients. The recipes are not super complicated, meaning you can get dinner on the table in a reasonable amount of time.

I have tried MANY recipes and all are tasty!

There are a great many recipes I can't wait to try

Did not provide menu assistance needed for heart or diabetes diets. Was a waste of my $

#19,338 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The novel is well written but it is based on a flawed premise. A large meteor strike hits the Washington DC and Chesapeake Bay area and ejects enough water vapor into the atmosphere to cause a runaway greenhouse effect and eventually ‘boil the oceans’. While water vapor is a greenhouse gas per se, it is not capable of forcing a runaway effect as described because its presence in the atmosphere is self limiting via precipitation. The author recognizes that there would be initially be a global winter effect, dropping the global temperature by over 2 degrees prior to the supposed runaway effect and ignores the consequence that the water vapor ejected into the atmosphere would precipitate as snow and rain. Ordinarily, I can suspend disbelief when reading sci-fi but this is such a whopper that I could not recommend the book.

I recently finished reading Mary Robinette Kowal's wonderful new novel The Calculating Stars. It's set in an alternate 1952 in which the US has launched the first space satellite, opening the space race. Then, Washington DC and most of the East Coast of the US gets obliterated by a meteorite. The climate changes from that impact threaten to render Earth uninhabitable, making getting to Mars a priority. The novel is written in first person, and our narrator is Elma York, mathematician and wife of Nathaniel York. She is a computer - AKA a human mathematician hired to compute stuff, in this case space launch trajectories. She's also a former WASP, a group of women hired to ferry military airplanes around in WWII. This comes in handy, as her piloting skills allow her and her husband to survive the impact. She eventually decides that she wants to be am astronaut, and that's where the conflict is. This is the 1950s, and women are supposed to be in the kitchen, not in space. Oh, and Elma suffers from anxiety, for which she is eventually proscribed Miltown. This set of circumstances makes for a fascinating read. Mary gets to explore sexism, racism (blacks were computers too) and mental health while writing a gripping and entertaining book. It's very eye-opening for me, a straight white dude, to see the problems facing people like Elma - people who can and do contribute greatly.Mary takes a few liberties with history, notably having Dewey defeat Truman in 1948. (Well, that and the asteroid.) However, one thing she is true to - most of the math that got men into orbit was done by hand, mostly by women. It's a fascinating detail. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

What a start! Giant meteorite, east coast wiped out, the world doomed by coming nuclear summer - the oceans will boil! Whoa! I was all in. Then we follow all of that with...well, the the domestic life of the protagonist and her gal pal pilot friends. Huh? Will she get to be an astronaut?? (You want to take a guess?)It's really not a badly written exploration of life in the 50's, and the struggles women and people of color had just to be taken seriously, but that novel could have been written just as well without the world threatening opening. It just seemed light and trivial. Antisemitism even pops up later in the book - for about a page - but then, "Oops, never mind, I didn't mean to be antisemitic. Sorry!." "Oh, you were just being a grump. We forgive you! Group hug!"It just came across as too light in general. I doubt I'd bother with any other books in the series.

I just finished listening to the Audible version of THE CALCULATING STARS by Mary Robinette Kowal, narrated by the author herself, and—let me tell you—her performance is MASTERFUL.I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and MRK’s fluid transitions between well-developed and nuanced character voices—many with distinctive ethnicities and accents—is among the best of the best. Her performance really enhances the experience of this well-researched alternative history set at the dawn of the space program in the 1950’s, when a devastating meteorite impact triggers an extinction event that catapults humankind into a space race to colonize Mars. This novel is as much a tribute to the unsung heroes of our own nascent space program, many of whom happened to be women, as it is a solid and entertaining story.

This is one of my new favorite novels, a brilliant alternate history of the space race. I was spellbound from the first page with the story of a brilliant mathematician, physicist, and pilot who desires with all she has to become a true lady astronaut. In this alternate history, the space race must proceed at a rapid pace because of a meteor that destroyed millions of people, the aftereffects which will likely make Earth uninhabitable in the not-so-distant future. There are familiar historical figures--Martin Luther King Jr., while never appearing in scene, is referenced and plays a key role--and fictitious characters as well.I liked that this was "hard science fiction," with very specific and accurate details about the technology (the author actually took trips to NASA and had astronauts critique her book). And yet the science never became incomprehensible--it was accessible and engaging. There were many well-crafted subplots--the quest for female rights and racial equality. Like Hidden Figures, it focused on people that have often been ignored and yet have played indispensable roles in history. The voice was refreshing and engaging. As a cool writing technique, there was a very interesting shift from past tense to present tense near the end of the book. This novel transformed my appreciation of flight--both flight within and without our atmosphere. I highly recommend it.
