Review

"Taut suspense, strong characterization, and dark, rapid-fire humor are the highlights of this excellent SF adventure debut."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Full of fast-paced action and brutal palace intrigue, starring the fiercest princess this side of Westeros."―B&N.com"This debut ranks among the best political SF novels in years, largely because of the indomitable, prickly Hail ... fast-paced, twisty space opera."―Library Journal (starred review)"A darn good space adventure yarn. It takes the best of the smugglers' corner of the Star Wars universe and adds political intrigue and family drama."―Tor.com"Promising science-fiction series ... for fans of stories with plenty of action and political maneuvering."―Booklist"Behind the Throne opens with a bang and maintains the momentum throughout the story."―RT Book Reviews"The start of a damn good series. Rich world building, great characters, and an enthralling story make for a page turner."―Pop Culture Beast

About the Author

K.B. Wagers is the author of the Indranan War trilogy and the forthcoming Farian War trilogy, about the gunrunner empress Hail Bristol. They live in the shadow of Colorado's Pikes Peak with their partner and a crew of poorly behaved cats. They're especially proud of their second-degree black belt in Shaolin Kung Fu and their three Tough Mudder completions. There's never really a moment when they're not writing, but they do enjoy fountain pens and good whiskey.

One of the best SF books I've read in a while and to think it's a debut novel. Loved it. The world building, based on India and the Hindu religion, was superb. I loved the main character, Hailimi Mercedes Jaya Bristol, is wonderful in her own right, but the cheesy blurb on the back that likened her to Star Wars characters almost put me off the book when I first picked it up. So happy I ignored that and took a chance on Behind the Throne. Her two body guards, Zin and Emmory were my kind of guys and, coming from an SF romance background, I keep hoping for a relationship to spark between Hail and Emmory, but given the culture, not likely. I've already pre-ordered the sequel and can't wait to get it.

I hate those reviews where someone spoils the plot of the book for you. I'm not going to do that. What I will do is say that every one of the stars I gave this book was earned.Likes:Strong female character - Hail is badass. Sure, she sometimes borders on too amazing and too good, but K.B. yanks her back from being a Mary Sue, with a hard dose of reality and vulnerability.Detailed (but not too detailed) world building. - Have you ever read one of those books where the author spends 2 pages describing the leaves on the tree? This is not that. It's fast paced, descriptive but not overly so. I felt like I was allowed to use my imagination.Diversity in characters. It's not all a lumped homogeneous mire. - Not just race but also sexuality. AwwwesomesauceFamiliar Science Fiction - Behind the Throne is set in the future on another planet, but things are familiar and if they are not, they're explained in Earth terms.Loved Hail and the rest of the crew and I can't wait to read the next installment.

The story is about a member of a royal family who, after having spent several years traveling incognito and working as a gunrunner, is dragged back home.In the first third of the book, we learn that she doesn't want to be a princess, but does want to find out who is responsible for hurting members of her family. And... that's about it. Over and over. Gets really tedious. I almost stopped reading. In the middle third of the book, she mostly sits in her suite of rooms, trading Meaningful Glances with her staff. Occasionally she leaves so somebody can make a clumsy assassination attempt. In the final third of the book, things pick up a bit. Things get blown up and shot at. Destiny accepted.I rated this about 2.5 stars, but rounded up because it got better toward the end.

We start in-media-res as gunrunner Hail Bristol wakes fromunconsciousness in the wreckage of her ship convinced that her crewis in mutiny and her lover is dead (possibly while trying to killher). Then the ship is boarded by Imperial hunters who have cometo..Take Hail back to her mother, the Empress. It seems that while Hail was out pursuing her father's killer and graduallycutting all ties with home, her sisters and niece have been murdered, hermother is dying and she is *it*, the heir apparent. The Indranan Empire, although now multi-ethnic is a matriarchy based onon Indian culture. Having broken away from Terra centuries ago (althoughnow enjoying fairly good relations again) it is a medium sized powerand very much a monarchy. Although there are laws and procedures thatare normally followed, apparently the Empress can make her will feltat any level of society subject only to not losing the support of theMatriarch's council (and frankly, she can defenestrate most of themif she feels like it). Arriving back home, Hail is immediately throwninto a welter of conspiracies and the realization that her mother isnot just dying -- she was poisoned. Along with all this, and probablynot coincidentally, the Saxon Alliance is pushing at the frontiersand may have actually invaded an Imperial world using Russian "littlegreen men" tactics. Hail must decide who, if anyone, she can trustan start to prune the rot at the heart of the Empire.Hail is an engaging character, though at times she comes across as abit callow (unless it's intended to be a cultural thing, she sticksher tongue out at people too often). It is, I think, meant to bea bit un-nerving that she is no democrat and believes unflinchinglyin the monarchy (despite having turned her back on it for years).

I loved the irreverent, smart and deadly Hailimi Bristol, who has quite the reputation in the galaxy as a gunrunner and all around bad ass. That is until two Trackers catch up with her right after an attempt on her life left her a bit more vulnerable than usual with all of her crew dead, including the man she loved. The Trackers return her home to take her place as Princess and heir to the Indranan Empire. Her sisters and niece have been killed and she is the only one left to take over once her mother, the ailing Empress, is gone. Of course there is plenty of action, with multiple attempts on her life, the threat of war with the Saxons and much intrigue at court. She has to figure out who is behind it all if she wants to survive to punish her family’s killers and save the Empire. I liked the matriarchal empire, with their society based on Hindu culture but with changes since it’s been thousands of years since their ancestors came from earth. The secondary characters were great - the Trackers who become her trusted Bodyguards, Emmory and Zin, and several retainers, who give her a base of trusted allies when it seems that everyone else is trying to kill her or at the least, discredit her. Hail is one tough woman, and it seems that her career as a gunrunner was just what she needed to prepare her to fight for her place on the throne. The second book in the series releases soon, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
