We are all predestined to live the path of life we are on. Like the final six candidates who were chosen (because their names were not crossed out), the path to heaven is straight and narrow and few of us are privileged by His grace, will be chosen and be guided by the good Shepherd to pass through that final door to meet the Source. The blinding golden light. Like Pearson and millions of others, I hugely enjoyed the 6-seasons long "Lost" (I wished there were more seasons because there were much more plot development possibilities), a television series most definitely in my top five all time favourites. Obviously, to read Dr Moore's very substantial and also very subjective (in my opinion) to his own perspective Lost Humanity: The Mythology and Themes of Lost, it is imperative to have watched "Lost" and remembered well the myriad characters & their names and episodic events in the story to make head or tail of Dr Moore's rather thorough and expansive discourse on his favourite parts. It was nevertheless fun to read Pearson's version as he had widened my scope on the story with many tangential angles I would never have seen or pondered upon. The millions of fans of "Lost", me one of them, enjoyed the series in our own unique dynamic viewing experience with our favorite beloved "Lost" characters' different life stories and how their paths had crossed as dictated by fate (Jacob). It was a individual experience uniquely different for every viewer because every viewer has a different background based on his/her education, culture, life experience, popular culture exposure, religious beliefs or disbelief. Pearson made references to Star Trek stories and Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland", both of which I have little or no exposure to. Therefore, I agreed to only a portion of Person's interpretations. But he certainly took me much further on some of the characters such as his favourite characters "The protector, Jacob and MIB". I was intrigued by Pearson's unbalanced focus on this one "Across the sea" episode amongst the 121-episode series. Yet Pearson didn't share his thoughts on why Jacob, who had lived thousands of years, could confer immortality on Richard Alpert, while obviously had foreseen his knifing by Ben, did not resist or defend himself. The only explanation I came to was Jacob following his own destiny and not because he was tired of being the “protector”. After all, to maintain the credibility of fate's modus operandi, "Destiny" obviously cannot break the rule that all must adhere, without exception, to their own destined paths in the mortal world, Jacob included. Another interesting thing Pearson had omitted expanding on was Jacob's preoccupation with weaving tapestries while living in the remnant of the fox/cat headed human giant statue, the 4-toed foot. I see that as a symbol of Jacob being "Destiny" himself, deciding the fates of human lives, like the ones he touched while they they came to the island in all parts of the world from childhood to adulthood before they ended up on the island. Every thread represented one life and every life is predestined to a certain path as dictated by Jacob as each is woven into the vast fabric of cosmically interconnected lives. "Lost" belonged to a mixture of genres. The strongest, which Pearson was on the same page with me was the Ecclesiastical genre because coursing throughout the story, we witnessed themes on faith, destiny, predestination, redemption and self-sacrifice, the good shepherd leading the chosen few through the pearly gates into the light, which is the Source of all goodness. Yes it was curtains time when the characters' sojourn in purgatory (the island and flashbacks and time travel to explore and settle each individual's unfinished business) has ended because they were no longer "Lost" and had finally found themselves or purpose to their human existence. Some could pass through the gates to meet the light while others remain in limbo (I was thinking Dante) as whisperers like Michael or worse, some ended somewhere where there is no redemption. How many actually passed through the church doors into "The light" we did not see because curtains came down too soon. But the Bible tells us that only those chosen few whose names are in the book of life will make it. So I am guessing only the six names that were not crossed out made it. The second important genre was the sci-fi and fantasy because it had elements of time travel, miraculous healing & resurrection (arguably this can be Ecclesiastical genre too), extremely powerful magnetic field, apparitions & necromancer, polar bears in tropical Hawaii, invisible and smoke monsters. I felt Pearson had ended his book too soon without exploring the humanity of the other major characters like John Locke and Desmond Hume, who fascinated me most. Pearson likes Kate, Jack and Christian most. Perhaps in Pearson's next book, I can read more of the others. But overall, Pearson pointed us on the major theme, the biblical theme coursing through the 6 seasons. Ajira 316 was referencing, John 3.16, the source of light (John 8:12, Jesus is the light of the world) and shimmering flowing water from the source (John 4.14, water drunk one will never thirst) Empty coffin was referencing the empty tomb of Christ, Christian Shepherd was the good shepherd leading all the chosen ones into the church after they have been "Lost" and have found themselves. When the chosen ones were ready to move from purgatory to heaven, Christian Shepherd opened the church door revealing a blinding golden white light.

Pearson Moore is well-studied and has a lot of interesting things to say about Lost that goes well-beyond the usual episode recap nonsense that you encounter online. He accepts the series as a text worthy of analysis and speculation and, as such, is well worth reading. I have my own issues with some of his conclusions, most notably that his ideas about Lost rest largely on the triumph of faith, with the assumption that the character of John Locke was right as the center of his presentation. I think that simplifies both the theme and conclusions of the show, as well as the character of John Locke, who may have understood that the Island was special, but couldn't tell you why anymore than the Dharma Initiative. Locke's only real purpose turns out to be as a martyr to inspire action on the part of others through his real fate as a pawn game piece that seems to have been manipulated by all the players involved. That's hardly the sort of character I would want to tag as the centerpiece of any of my theories. In fact, though Pearson excoriates scientists in the show, through the representation of Daniel Faraday, scientists come off rather well - through observation, he could at least tell you particulars and theorize about the specialness of the Island. And his calculations were apparently born out through circumstances encountered on the Island. In this way, he knew more than Locke ever did and really cuts in half the idea of Locke as a figure of noble faith. I prefer to read Locke as a tragic character, whose need was so entrenched in his actions that they ultimately undid him. A very sad case and more powerful because of the tragedy that followed him.A thought-provoking book that approaches Lost as a place for interpretation - that I disagree with Moore about John Locke only speaks to the power of the show and Moore's efforts to address it in intellectually satisfying terms.

I stumbled upon Moore's gem of a book while doing research for writing a book of my own about Lost. Moore has done a superb and excellent job exploring the mythology and themes in Lost. He goes even further into each character in his excellent follow up, LOST Identity: The Characters of LOST. But here in this book he is magnificent in exploring the various themes in Lost. Other reviewers touch upon some more specifics, so I'll just say my one critique of the book and then some overall praise.The one thing I didn't care for was the introduction/prologue of a fictional conversation between him and some of the characters post-TV series. It was a little too cute, but let him have his fun and then get to the good stuff. He also has a lengthy dialogue between two philosophers that I also didn't care for. So while the dialogue he writes leaves much to be desired, 95% of the book is expose and prose that is extremely illuminating and entertaining.Well done, Mr. Moore. I haven't come across another book that weaves together so many different themes in Lost, exploring each one deeply, and doing so in such a refreshing way (and trust me - I've read almost all there is, both online and in print, about Lost!). The book is thoroughly researched without getting bogged down in the details, and yet doesn't stray far away from the source material. It also isn't terribly long or short, but just right in its treatment of so much. Frankly, I wanted more, but then maybe I'll have to write my own book on Lost...Finally, the pricing for the Kindle edition of both books is a gift in and of itself. This is Moore's labor of love, his gift to offer us, and you will be greatly satisfied in reading his beautiful work.

I'm a recently retired professor of human anatomy & physiology, and I wish I had had this text before retiring. I enjoyed reading this book as what is now only recreation for me rather than material for my courses, continuing to learn about the details and perspectives of the developmental and evolutionary changes leading to the adult human head that, frankly, I confess that I didn't know while teaching A&P for almost 40 years, and that's why I wish I had this book years ago in order to enhance the information that I otherwise could have offered my students. Oh, well. While I can't use it anymore for teaching, I highly recommend this book to current A&P faculty.And as an afterthought, although I cannot speak as an anthropologist, I would imagine that those in that field, both faculty and grad students, would also immensely appreciate the contents of this work.

The Evolution of the Human Head begins with Daniel E. Lieberman highlighting the movie nonlogic of Planet of the Apes that shows apes functioning in a human manner with ape heads, which I appreciated. Lieberman demonstrates the complexity and evolvability of the head as a structure and emphasizes that the various components interact with and affect each other in development throughout the book. The book covers bone structuring, organs, senses, diet, teeth, and the characteristics of living and fossil primates. Page 40 notes the importance of the gene Runx-2 (also known as Cbfa 1) that regulates osteoblast differentiation in intramembranous bones so that elevated levels of expression cause increased rates of bone production, and the gene's absence leads to a lack of bone formation; page 40 also notes the importance of the Sox9 transcription factor for the differentiation and proliferation of chondrocytes for endochondral bones. The differences in skull development from neonate to adult for the chimpanzee and the modern human are shown in Figure 4.3 on page 105, in Figure 4.7 on page 116, and in Figure 4.9 on page 125, showing the projecting effect of depository growth fields in the chimp's jaws and the nonprojecting effect of resorptive growth fields in the human's upper jaws and face and in the upper lower jaw. On page 215, Lieberman notes his interesting experiment of juvenile mini-pigs running on a treadmill everyday an hour a day for three months had thicker leg bones (which he expected) and thicker cranial vaults (which he did not expect) as a way of explaining the thinning of modern human skulls over the last few thousand years since the origins of agriculture by theorizing that exercise triggers a systemic growth response; my personal experience in running supports the experiment's results as I've concluded that the entire skeletal structure is strengthened from the strong impacts, noticing that even the neck bone feels significantly stronger from regular running. Page 248 notes the limiting effect of the derived, inactivated version of the MYH16 gene that causes smaller weaker muscles in modern humans. On page 350, Figure 9.5 shows the different positions of the foramen magnum for (a) Homo sapiens, (b) Australopithecus africanus, (c) Sahelanthropus tchadensis, and (d) Pan troglodytes. On page 555, Figure 13.7 contrasts a recent gracile modern-human skull (left, a male from Italy) with an older robust Pleistocene skull (right, Zhoukoudian, Upper Cave 101), showing the thicker, larger construction of the Pleistocene skull. On page 565, Figure 13.11 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo erectus cranium (KNM-ER 3733) into a Homo heidelbergensis skull (average of Kabwe and Petralona) with arrows showing the required upward and downward directions of growth. Let me give you a sample:"The prosencephalic signaling center produces signaling factor (Shh and Fgf8) that induce neural crest cells surrounding the forebrain to differentiate into mesenchymal cells that make up the upper third of the face above the stomodeum..."If that all makes sense to you, then you are probably the right audience. But if not, think twice before investing.

It might seem pointless to write a review of one of the cornerstones of Christian literature, yet I purchased this particular edition after struggling with the first chapter of the less expensive Kindle edition of the Pusey translation. I am glad I did. The grammar of Augustine's Latin Silver Age easily handles stylistic complexities that are not natural to modern English, and this translation by Henry Chadwick renders Augustine's prose brilliantly. It reveals not so much a saint with a tortured past as a passionate and thoughtful young man sustained and drawn by a love for truth, beauty, and friends on a journey in search of the source of them, which Augustine finds in the God preached by the Catholic faith. Unlike Newman's "Apologia pro Vita Sua," the "Confessions" are not a defense of a life so much as a hymn of praise of the one who led him and gave it meaning. Augustine realizes that nothing was happenstance, but that God walked with him throughout the journey. One could view this story as a journey from alienation to fulfillment, but abstractions sell it short. In the late seventies as I worked on a master’s degree in agricultural economics, my best friend, who had just entered seminary, encouraged me to undertake study of classics in the faith and early on I read Augustine’s (1978) Confessions. The Confessions proved to be a challenging read both because of my lack of seminary training and because of the old English translation. When I undertook this year to write my own memoir, my friend encouraged me to return to the Confessions both because the Confessions provided a template for all memoirs to follow and because this time I also had seminary training.Convinced of the wisdom to return to the Confessions, I sought a more modern translation that would be easier to read and, to my delight, found a translation by E.J. Sheed with an introduction by Augustinian biographer, Peter Brown. Brown (2000) is revered as one of the leading Augustinian biographers of our time and I had used his biography during my days in seminary.I break this review up into four parts. In the first part, I give an overview of the Confessions and why we are interested. In the second part, I review the life of Augustine and sin, as he describes it. In the third part, I will focus on Augustine’s coming to faith. And, in the fourth part, I will review his theological writings, which focus on the creation accounts in Genesis.Background on AugustineFor those unfamiliar with church history, Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) , which was in modern-day Algeria, lived right after the time of Emperor Constantine the Great (272-337 AD) who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. Bishop Ambrose baptized Augustine who had such contemporaries as Jerome, who translated the Bible in Latin. The fourth century posed a heady time for the Christian church and Augustine’s theology influenced much of what followed. For example, Martin Luther (1483-1546), a leader in the reformation more than a thousand years later, was an Augustinian monk (Bainton 1995, 25).Of contemporary significance is the point that Augustine hailed from Africa where some of the best theology and early Bible manuscripts were copied. African scholarship dominated the early church and this dominance continued until the Islamic invasion in the sixth century, following the life and work of Mohammad (570-632 AD). The statement that Christianity is a “white man’s religion” (widely touted in developing countries) is not historically accurate and denigrates the significant contribution of African scholarship to the early church.What Are the Confessions?Augustine came to Christ as an adult. In his introduction, Peter Brown writes:“On Easter day, April 24th, 387, he [Augustine] had ‘put on Christ’ by receiving baptism at the hands of Ambrose.” (xv)Shortly before the death of his mother, Monica, who was a devout Catholic, later that year. Augustine supported himself teaching rhetoric, was heavily influenced by the writings of Plato, and wrote the Confessions to be read aloud. Each of the thirteen books could be read in about an hour’s time (xvi-xviii). Brown writes:“For, as Catholic bishop, Augustine did not simply know ‘about’ the Bible, or preach ‘on’ the Bible. He prayed out of it every day, using especially the book of Psalms, which he believed to be the direct, personal prayers of King David, and so the model of all Christan, as they had been of all Jewish, prayer.” (xvii-xviii)The influence of the Bible on the confessions is obvious to any reader because Augustine frequently begins a particular section in prayer and cites scripture throughout, allusions to which the editor has conveniently footnoted.Less obvious to the reader is the definition that Augustine used for confession. As noted by the editor’s glossary, for Augustine confession could be:1. a profession of faith,2. praise of God, or3. an act of penance (self-accusation).Today, we primarily assume the last definition (329).In his book, Confessions, Augustine of Hippo describes his life before and after converting to Christianity as an adult. Augustine shamelessly lays out the sins of his life, saying:“Let the mind of my brethren love that in me which You teach to be worthy of love, and grieve for that in me which You teach to be worthy of grief.” (191)I take this statement to mean that Augustine proposes to be frankly forthright in confession so that he can be an example to others. Is it any wonder that people trusted him and followed him into the monastic life? Having read the Confessions as a young man, I truly believe that they helped lead me to live ascetic lifestyle, even after it was no longer a financial necessity. There is no need to discuss the mercy, wisdom and beauty of Augustine's "Confessions", a classic treatise on the human condition, the source of sorrows and joys.Having read several translations with my favorite being worn out, I replaced it with this translation hoping for the best. The translation exceeded my expectations bringing me new and fresher understanding of Augustine's theological thoughts and my own situation.I am a simple lay person, not scholarly; I know there is much more to be gleaned from this wonderful translation and will keep at it. What I especially enjoyed are the footnotes that refer the reader to the scriptures that reflect Augustine's words, fleshing out a deeper, more practical meaning to the scriptures contextualized with everyday life. This is the area I want to follow up more thoroughly and diligently.The book binding is good for me as the inner margin seems slightly bigger than most paperback books easing the usual tendency of having to read on the curve of a book. A silly little thing that makes reflective reading better somehow.I agree with the translators decisions to keep some of the " Thee's" and "Thou's' to convey Augustine's use of the words when they express his personal intimacy with God as distinguished from generalized concepts of God. They draw me in to greater reverence and understanding.

“The Future of the Mind” continues a line of inquiry that Michio Kaku has been following with his earlier books “Physics of the Impossible” and “Physics of the Future.” The central question remains: what sci-fi imaginings might come to fruition, which of them are impossible given the laws of physics in the known universe, and what breakthroughs or discoveries would be necessary to achieve the achievable. Technology is the inevitable gateway to these advanced breakthroughs. Humanity has eliminated gross evolutionary pressures through technology—this might not remain true, but we can certainly not expect “X-men” style mutations as a result of the foreseeable progression of humanity (which is more likely to be described by the horrible—though probably presagious 2006 movie “Idiocracy” than it is by the “X-men” movies.)The theme of the book, as the title suggests, is the mind. As the most complex system that we know of, the human nervous system offers fertile ground for investigation. Among the sci-fi mainstays considered by Dr. Kaku are telepathy, telekinesis, false memories (think “Total Recall”), intelligence enhancement, mind control, artificial intelligence, and the nature of alien minds. Along the way he considers the challenges of reverse engineering the brain and whether consciousness could take a non-material form (e.g. embedded in a beam of light.)As always, Kaku’s book is easy to follow, even for the scientific neophyte. Few others write on the topic with such clarity. While part of Kaku’s book deals with the same concepts covered by Roger Penrose in his book “Shadows of the Mind”, the Kaku book scores much higher in readability. Of course, the flipside is that Kaku’s book offers less explanatory power. So if one isn’t looking for pop science simplification, “The Future of the Mind” is probably not for you. However, if you want the jist of the science and have neither the background nor the energy to digest the mathematical and biological nuance, you’ll find this book readable.Incidentally, Kaku is more optimistic about the ability to computationally replicate consciousness than Penrose, which the latter argues is impossible. Professor Kaku’s optimism runs through all of his books. He takes the stance that if one can imagine it--and figure out a technological or theoretical loophole around the known barriers --one can achieve it. Therefore, some of his discussion of what could come to pass depends upon theories about, for example, black-holes being true. It should be noted that Kaku is quite clear about the differences of opinion that exist about these theories and the role that differences between theory and reality could play in making science fiction into scientific reality.I enjoyed this book. I’ve been reading a lot about neuroscience lately—entirely on the pop science level- and found this book to be beneficial to my understanding of the subject. It begins by discussing what is known about the brain and consciousness—it turns out that a lot remains unknown, but the technology of recent years has vastly improved our understanding of the brain, and it continues to do so by the day. The book also delves into the depths of what could come to be. There is definitely pragmatic understanding to be gained as well as outlandish, but fun, science fiction ruminations.For sci-fi fans and writers, it’s definitely worth reading. I had many new conceptions of the future as I read the book. (I might suggest reading "Physics of the Impossible" first, which gives an overview many “impossible” technologies and explains how few are just flat impossible regardless of technological development and scientific discovery.) Many of the ideas covered may seem a bit eccentric, such as what first contact with an alien race would look like. (Kaku is of the notion that the transmission of an immaterial consciousness(es), possibly in conjunction with self-replicating machines would be the likely shape of such an alien presence.)I recommend this book for almost anyone. We are really only beginning to venture out of the dark ages understanding the mind, and this book provides an interesting map what might be possible.

I heard some Michio Kaku's conferences and i wanted to read this book because his way of thinking about science is so human and real so this book is like having Michio telling you his scientific-based ideas of the future, with that philosophical and humorous tone that he have. It will open your mind and will make you more conscious of where are we as humanity in terms of social and scientific development. Besides, as a fiction writer it gave me a lot of ideas for some text that i'm developing by the moment. Totally recomended for anybody with a bit of curiosity about the science and human mind.

I'd describe this book as eye-opening, to say the least. Like most people, I've had my fair share of futuristic thinking. Of course this is easier when you're equipped with better scientific understanding. After reading you would notice that author Michio Kaku did this well in the beginning of the book - before he entered unchartered territory. Being a professor and public educator, Kaku's didactic skills are unquestionably on par. He starts by explaining the brain and it's different parts (e.g. Amygdala, Thalamus, etc) and the functions and purpose of each. He also introduces (or reiterates) to us brain-scanning technologies and their functions and limitations (EEG, MRI, etc). He also comes up with his space-time theory of consciousness and how he believes there's different levels based on brain structure and parameters. For example, level 0 consciousness is designated to plants because of their "lack of" ability to understand space, time, and social relations. I put quotations because he doesn't necessarily describe it as alack of a ability, or give it any kind of negative connotation. Humans, on the opposite side of the scale have level 3 consciousness because we can understand space and time (our ability to stimulate the future and analyze the past) and posses a prefrontal cortex. Overall he describes consciousness as being the product of multiple feedback loops that ultimately accomplish a goal. This is reminiscent of Daniel Dennett's 'Multiple Drafts Model' interpretation of consciousness which of course is more sophisticated and less elementary than what you'd learn about consciousness in this book. Kaku eventually enters and explores the radical domain of possibility, the possible results of a better understanding of the mind. I'll list many: telepathy, telekinesis, mind-controlling, disease-curing, enhancing intelligence, entering dreams, artificial intelligence, and alien contact.The tone can be described as being conversational, at many times the author references his conversations with scientists who specialize on the particular topic. Although I dislike the importation of personal anecdotes in scientific texts, the author doesn't use them to prove a point or supplement an idea but rather to give a human touch and provide a consensus - pertinent point of view. There is indeed a lot to fathom, and although I can personally grasp a lot of novel futuristic ideas, I did have a hard time with some of the concepts in this book. I think some things are overly speculative and perhaps should have been developed further before being introduced in the book. This leads the title "The Future Of The Mind" to be a bit misleading. The word "speculative" or "uncertain" would be a more germane addition to the title, and do it better justice. Also, the content is not at least to the degree of high majority about the mind. What I mean is that many other things are discussed, like AI (artificial intelligence), societal implications, and research institutions. This isn't to knock the intellectual integrity of such discussions, but rather the elusive title. This is my only criticism, or rather importunity, to a otherwise well-written and interesting book.4.3

I wanted to read today's book - The Beautiful Strangers by Camille Di Maio - primarily because I thought the cover of the book was very pretty and it drew me in. I hadn't even read the synopsis of the book when I requested the opportunity to read and review it on NetGalley, so it was a fun surprise to read when I was approved!The luxury beachfront Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, California is the mecca for two women many years apart from each other. Many years ago, a woman died tragically on the steps of the hotel leading toward the beach and still haunts the hotel to this day. Then, in 1958, Kate Morgan is working in her family's failing restaurant in San Francisco and is looking for a way out. Thanks to her grandfather's insistence, Kate sells her grandmother's ring, takes the money and goes to the Hotel Del Coronado to work in the kitchen on a set for a movie called "Some Like It Hot". The storyline is cool because readers are placed onto a movie set, they meet Marilyn Monroe and other actors while following Kate on her journey.Kate is anxious in her journey and tragically, as she is traveling, her suitcase is stolen, she is without food and hungry and isn't very presentable upon her arrival. She learns the story about the ghost who lived at the Hotel Del Coronado with the same name as her. Readers learn about Kate Morgan from today and the Kate Morgan from the past as they tell their stories each in alternating chapters and time periods which allows the story of who the beautiful stranger is becomes apparent.The Beautiful Strangers is told with two points of view - the ghost Kate Morgan and the young Kate Morgan, which really ties together the stories of the two generations. I read this book cover to cover in one sitting. I first bought and read the Kindle version of this book. It was excellent and I want family and friends to read the book. So, I bought the book to share with others.

I have greatly enjoyed Camille’s previous works, most especiallyBefore the Rain Falls. The Beautiful Strangers is another winner! The character(s) of Kate and her great grandmother, Kate (a ghost!) are amazing. she also describes a magical place of Coronado. The reader can imagine the warm sea breezes and the golden, glittering sand. A lovely story that unlocks a family mystery and proves that taking a chance pays off for Kate and her family. I love the dual timeline of the “Kates” and the sweet ending.

I always enjoy historical fiction this book was awesome, I felt like I was part of the story feeling anxious for Kate and excited when she made it! Thanks, I'll be reading all Camille's books now.

I enjoyed his book. I've stayed at the Hotel Del and knew of its history. I liked being able to picture the setting. I always enjoy a little ghostly fun and a happy ending and this book had it all.
