As a former military Physician Assistant, I know that well fed troops are healthier and do better in combat and training. The advances in military feeding really started w/ Napoleon and stagnated until someone invented the can opener years after the can was invented. WW1 was the real big leap in rations and WW2 allowed the shipping of foods in huge quantities overseas to feed the Allied world. Her book delves into the overlap of military food concerns, Natick lab and the influences on civilian feeding. Like any book written by a non scientist, her facts may be skewed like one reviewer wrote because she quoted a bad source but over all I found this book well written funny and thought provoking! I actually laughed out loud at some of her quips and quotes. I do not agree with her use of warriors and "HER" for every one. Soldiers are of both genders and should remain -soldiers! Also having dined on MCIs(C-rations), LRPS, MREs, A, B rations T-rations for 32 years of active duty, I am familiar with the consuming part but not the science behind the food and found it fascinating. The Chees puff and the dehydrated chees products was a crack up! I do disagree that the LRPS were not liked. I loved them! We called them Vomit Omelets because they looked like someone puked in a bag! They were good if you got the water balance right! I have eaten many foreign rations and found some intriguing and some lacking! I did recommend this book to my wife who also served in the military during the MCI usage. This is a fun book with a great premise! Many positive things do come from the military!

Great book, very informative about the origins of many of the commercial food mass-production techniques/technologies in use today. This covers both technical and political information, and it was a super interesting read.

It's a very interesting look at how the military's need for sustainable foods for soldiers in the field and in combat has influenced what Americans (others eat). My copy arrived quickly and in great condition.

It is truly amazing how food evolved. That your great grand mother would not recognize most of the food we all regularly eat is a revolution.

Fascinating book.

The content of this book is super informative but I just cannot get over the writer's style. She seems to use twice as many words a necessary to communicate her points. To her defense, the book would be very short without this embellished style.

An important book. Made it clear for me where so many bad eating habits come from. Focused on American food, but I wonder how many other countries can trace back a similar food history.Eye opening!
