Why do people write memoirs? In many cases it is because they're trying to figure out how the people and the events affected their lives. Maybe sitting down at a computer, shuffling through those memories and putting them to paper is easier than sitting with a psychotherapist. Judy Batalion has written an interesting memoir about growing up with a mentally ill, hoarder mother and a passive father, who seemed to do little to address his wife's problems. Their daughter basically had to raise herself, with some input from her father and her maternal grandmother."White Walls" is an interesting title for a book that explores what it's like to live with a hoarder, whose massive amount of possessions had threatened to make the Batalion's house unlivable. Judy's mother, daughter of Holocaust survivors, came to Canada as a young child. She married a much older doctor and had two children, Judy and a younger brother. Although she worked for many years outside the home, she also took care of her parents as they aged. And she bought things. Mostly at bargain prices and in bulk. She pushed her husband out of their bedroom by the sheer accumulation of "stuff". I don't know much about "hoarders" but I'd think living with one must be extremely difficult. Judy grew up in a house-of-chaos and felt responsibility for her mother that she was much too young to do. How do you "mother" your own mother, when you need mothering yourself? Judy's father seemed to me to exist as "background". He rarely stood up to his wife and her problems but did have a positive hand in raising the children. The bottom line - however - is how can children cope living in an unstable environment? And why are the children responsible for their mother and her mental state? It's clear that Judy Batalion, who has accomplished quite a bit in her life, loves her parents, and tries to understand them. But maybe her mother is "unknowable". Judy married a British lawyer - who, curiously, also has a mother who's a hoarder - and has two daughters. They seem to have a happy life together and maybe it's because Judy Batalion has tried to understand her own past.

I was a little disappointed in this book. For some reason I thought the author would explore her mother's and grandmother's stories of eluding capture by the Nazis and struggling in Europe more. She provides glimpses, but never the entire story. Readers are never told the diagnosis of her mother, just that she suffers from paranoia and hoarding. It was an interesting read, but sad too.

I’ve never been (nor contemplate being) the daughter of a hoarder, the grandchild of Holocaust survivors, a stand-up comedian, the mother of a newborn or a student of interior design. But this did what all good books do: It took me to an experience outside my own and made it convincing, sympathetic and real. Batalion has mastered the tricky art of sharing feelings -- often very painful ones -- in a straightforward way without being self-indulgent or self-important. Extra points because it made me laugh.

Judy Batalion has done a remarkable job of sharing her journey. Her writing is outstanding, clear, thoughtful, funny, witty, and intelligent. She has shed a light on hoarding and other aspects of mental illness, including the impact of all of this on her and her family. And yet, she has done it lovingly and respectfully. She also documents brave battles with illness, showing her personal strength and courage. I think this is a wonderful read that also has tremendous social value.

I'm still only a few chapters in, but I've already been sucked into this world where I see both myself and my children in some of the characters. I'm loving this book from the perspective of a parent, someone related to people who have hoarding/purging tendencies, and understanding how descending from holocaust survivors can have an impact for generations.

Some people have more on their plate to handle and overcome than others, and that was the case for Judy Batalion. This book held my interest from beginning to end. Her life was interesting to say the least, and her memoir about her life was well written.

I love a memoir that can be both poignant and funny. Batalion's story is a serious one--the daughter of a severe hoarder, Batalion grew up wanting to create space for herself. Her mother was the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, and she spent her life as a refugee. In many ways, as Batalion travels the world trying to find a place that feels like home, she mimics the life of a refugee. Yet as difficult as her childhood was Batalion finds humor in it, so while we have a clear picture of the trauma of her youth, the book is easy to read. The story jumps back and forth from Batalion's childhood/young adult years to her pregnancy with her first child. This well served the story, emphasizing how her past influenced her feelings about her own impending motherhood. While the story is specifically about a mother who is a hoarder, I think it's also a universal one; how do we grapple with the neurosis of our own childhoods as we become parents ourselves. How do we insure we don't pass them down to our children.I enjoyed reading Batalion's memoir and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a mother-daughter story.

I chose this book as I try to find some wisdom in my own mother-daughter relationship. It gave me glimpses of wisdom here and there but I really felt like I was listening in on someone else's therapy session. I'm glad the author is happy now and came to peace with her Mother, now off to find another book about Moms.
