Amazon.com Review

Due to the timing of its publication, Unfit for Command could be dismissed as the sort of controversial, loaded book typical in a presidential election year: Either courageous and necessary, or untruthful and malicious, depending on one's political point of view. Filled with interviews of men who served in Vietnam at the same time as John Kerry, the book poses the following question: "Why do an overwhelming majority of those who commanded or served with John Kerry oppose him?" (Note that the issue of "service" has sparked investigation into its definition--in other words, just how close was the interaction between Kerry and those cited in the book during KerryÂ’s Vietnam tour of duty?) The charges leveled against Kerry in this book are severe and include filing false operating reports; lobbying for and receiving three Purple Hearts for minor wounds, two of which were self-inflicted; receiving a Silver Star under false pretenses; offering false confessions of bogus war crimes in both print and testimony; and recklessness in the field, including the burning of a village without cause or direct order. The book also claims that Kerry left Vietnam after serving just four months instead of the usual one year tour and that he returned home and accused his fellow soldiers of atrocities without offering any evidence, endangering POWs in the process. It is debatable whether the book will change any minds, or votes. Instead, readers will likely reach one of two conclusions: Either John Kerry grossly misrepresented his military service or the authors are spinning the interviews that they conducted for ulterior motives. There is a third option, however; readers will further investigate both sides of the debate, and by doing so, may reach conclusions independent of partisan extremes. --Brian Neff

From Publishers Weekly

"What sort of combination of hypocrite and paradox is John Kerry?" ask the authors in this heated critique of the Democratic presidential candidateÂ’s Vietnam–era military service and antiwar activism. OÂ’Neill, a lawyer and swift boat veteran, and Corsi, an expert on Vietnam antiwar movements, argue that Kerry misrepresented his wartime exploits and is therefore incompetent to serve as commander in chief. Buttressed by interviews with Navy veterans who patrolled VietnamÂ’s waters, some along with Kerry, the book claims he exaggerated minor injuries, self-inflicted others, wrote fictitious diary entries and filed "phony" reports of his heroism under fire—all in a calculated quest to secure career-enhancing combat medals. They also maintain that Kerry, whom they call a "moral coward," committed atrocities that alarmed his peers and superior officers during his four-month tour of duty. Yet his activities on behalf of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War clearly raises the authorsÂ’ hackles the most, and they present KerryÂ’s post-war actions as additional, damning evidence of his "total unfitness," claiming that his testimony against the war "caused more deaths and prolonged the war in Vietnam by undermining support at home and contributing directly to a Vietnamese Communist victory." The battle that lies at the heart of this book is the decades-old feud between antiwar veterans and their my-country-right-or-wrong counterparts. The authorsÂ’ conservative take on the war is palpable: the U.S. military failed to unleash "massive, indiscriminate bombing" to force North VietnamÂ’s capitulation; the conflict was a struggle against communism, not a civil war; and the dissenting soldiers undermined homefront morale. Consequently, this overwrought and repetitive polemic seethes with a resentment that compromises the otherwise eyebrow-raising testimonies. Further, without access to KerryÂ’s full military and medical records, the authors rely heavily on 35-year-old recollections and recent Kerry biographies by Douglas Brinkley and a Boston Globe reporting team. Those looking for a thorough, unbiased investigation into KerryÂ’s wartime record would do best to wait for more objective, methodical chroniclers who have access to the relevant documents.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. A conservative, I had a strong distaste for John Kerry well before he ran for the presidency. His arrogance and sense of self-worth dripped off the screen whenever I saw him on television. Admittedly, I read this book because I was searching for confirmation that the man was unqualified to hold high public office. I found it in spades. If those who served directly with Kerry in Vietnam on the swift boats that patrolled southern Vietnam's rivers are to be believed (an overwhelming number attested to his unfitness), Kerry proved himself to be a contemptible, self-absorbed twit too eager to reach for his gun and far too eager to shred the reputations of his fellow soldiers who served solely for the purpose of his own political advancement. In short, a testament to a genuinely disgusting individual.

Should be "essential reading" for anyone that likes to be informed about the kind of rats that have invaded our political system. This book is well researched and well written.

First let me say I am a Libertarian and am do not support either Bush Or Kerry. I read the Book objectively and found the evidence compelling and accurate. I suspect there is even more to be uncovered. Kerry could refute them if he would release his records for all to see. I commend the Veterns for having the courage to write the expose` and get the truth out to the people.Kerry supporters have done nothing but respond with unfounded personal attacks that have been refuted in every case. The book is withstands careful examination and is a must read especially before you vote. They have the goods on Kerry. Ask yourself this: would you vote for PFC England if she ran for president in light of the abuses commited in Iraq? Well one has to ask the same question of John Kerry after exposing his own admissions of his personally commiting war crimes. Further it seems clear he lied about his medals and his service. He then came back to dishonor his country by further lying to the Senate and then meeting with the enemy in France. There are FBI reports sugessting he may have been part of a plot against certain Senators at the time. Read the book. Given these facts, I think Senator Kerry has alot of explaining to do and should pass the torch of the race to someone who America can trust. Thank you swift boat Vets for telling the truth. I will be voting for a 3rd party candidate, Michael Badnarik.

I thought this book would be just propaganda based on some pre-release "reviews" I read, but having read it for myself, now I can see that it is extremely well documented. The book quotes NUMEROUS "Swiftees" who DID serve with John Kerry on his short 4-month tour of Nam.I must say it is a real shocker. If 1% of it is true, then this guy should be in jail rather than running for president. The book raises questions that can be answered by Kerry's release of his whole military record, which the book indicates has not been done. This was a surprise to me.Recommendation: Undecided voters and partisans on BOTH sides would do well to actually read this book. The questions it raises and flat-out accusations it makes are worthy of an read and further objective investigation. As a former military officer, reading the numerous accounts of how Kerry turned and ran under fire, connived, lied, and shot himself in the ass with M-79 fragments to win his medals made my blood boil. Reading this makes you REALLY hope none of it is true and anxious for a detailed response instead of all the hyperbolic shouts of "lies, lies!". Ummm OK, sure, but what about the records, etc.Perhaps most striking is the vehemence and passion that the authors and scores of Kerry's former service-mates bring to the discussion of John Kerry's nature and character. These people do not just object to him, they see him as the cause of lost lives, a major contributing factor to a lost war and uniquely un-fit and unable to command military forces. And while that may seem dramatic in summary, when laid out in stark detail a very powerful case is made - based on named references. So far, I have not seen any disputation of the facts therein. Only rhetoric. Even if you love the guy, it's worthy of a read. You may ask yourself why so many who did serve with him "under fire" would want to say these things. You may ask yourself, where is the detailed response to this? All of it? ANY of it?Reading this is like reading old Stephen King. When he was still scary. Caution: read with the lights on. This is a real horror story. Anxiously awaiting to read the response to it.

Yes, I picked up the book because I do not like John Kerry. I was hoping to find something to be used in conversation with my friends who will vote Democrat in November. But with the media reports I did not expect much more than a hatchet job with perhaps a few bits of useful information.I was wrong. The book in thoroughly documented. Far less opinion than I expected. It does read more like a legal brief as each charge is backed up with sometimes several affidavits by eyewitness. As far as any scandal book that I have ever read, this is the most exhaustive and convincing one I have come across. It puts the true meaning back into the word scandal, removing the guilt usually associated with stories that feel like slander. This one is for real. The author's did their homework and seemed to write in anticipation of possible criticisms. To dismiss this book is to call about seventy Vietnam Vets liars. I could perhaps do that with a few of them, but 70?It is not the most exciting read and can be quite dry at times (the book would have a different meaning all together if the man in question wasn't running for president) , but the evidence is quite damning.
